Homeopathy & Menopause

Of all women’s health issues it is the subject of the menopause which brings the most enquiries to my practice. Many women require information in order to weigh up homeopathic medicines against Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which seems to be less popular now that the side effects are understood.

Finding themselves unable to cope in their usual way and feeling emotionally unstable is the often a spur to enquiry. The average age for menopause is now 51 and there is often a lot on the plate of a woman in her 50s. She may well be working, may be coming to terms with her children having left home and may have the responsibility for elderly parents. And she may be suffering with disturbed sleep as a consequence of hot flushes which just makes everything more stressful.

Hot flushes are probably caused by rising levels of FSH (follicular stimulating hormone). This is a hormone formed in the pituitary gland which is secreted in the run-up to the menopause in order to try and force the ovaries to produce more eggs. As the ovaries start to fail and ovulation ceases to occur every month, periods become irregular and may change in nature. It is not always recognised that this is what is happening and the transition from regular periods to the menopause may last some years. This length of time is known as the peri-menopause.

A transition such as the menopause is always stressful to some degree as it involves physical and emotional changes which need adapting to and integrating, and is affected by our inherited strengths and weaknesses as well as our cultural and social norms. There may be an assumption that because we are biologically programmed to go through such changes, we should be able to do so with ease. But each woman varies and each finds her own health affected in different ways. It is these difference that the homeopath examines when considering a prescription.

There’s always a lot to talk about with someone over 60.  What distinguishes this age group from younger ones is the fact that most people in this age bracket are living with at least one chronic condition.

Homeopathy for Men

Men are reluctant to get help for their health problems. Even though a man’s average life expectancy is six years less than a woman’s, they often delay seeking help until their situation has become serious or can no longer be ignored.
