Homeopathy & Men

Homeopathy treats the whole you!

Men are reluctant to get help for their health problems. Even though a man’s average life expectancy is six years less than a woman’s, they often delay seeking help until their situation has become serious or can no longer be ignored.

Embarrassment and white coats

Men have difficulty finding the words to talk about the more intimate parts and functions of their body with doctors. And the merest suspicion of a digital rectal examination will deter most men from visiting a GP. The sad fact is that prostate cancer is just as common as female breast cancer, but how often do you hear men discussing the importance of screening or the detection of early signs of abnormality as women do?

Brave soldiers

Male machismo has much to answer for. Men and boys are programmed to be tough, brave and independent. A torn ligament on the football pitch may earn admiration from male peers, but how many mention their symptoms related to stress, anxiety, depression, chest pain, smoking or alcohol consumption. Alcohol and substance abuse is five times higher in men than women and men are four times more likely to die from liver cancer.

Mind and body

Our state of mind is critical to our physical health. This is backed up by American research showing that those who suffer frequent bouts of depression are 40% more likely to develop heart disease – the number one killer of men in the U.K.

Depression is epidemic. Up to 20% of the population can expect to suffer from a major disabling bout of depression during their lifetime. Traditionally there has been a marked gender imbalance in depression with three times as many women as men suffering. In fact, it now appears rates of depression amongst men are rising as those in women decrease. 75% of all suicides are male, with the rate for young men currently rising alarmingly. And young men are falling prey to what were previously considered to be female anxieties connected to their image, as evidenced by the rising rate of anorexia.

Everyone must know by now the impact of exercise, relaxation and good nutrition on health. But equally important is our emotional health both for its own sake and because it’s closely tied to physical health. Conventional medicine views the two separately. What makes homeopathy very different is it’s consideration of the whole person – emotional and physical.

This means that when you consult a homeopath you will be asked about your lifestyle and the sorts of pressures you’re under as well as details of your particular medical condition. The different stresses men are subject to throughout their lives affect their health in many ways. Pressure and unhappiness at work, becoming a parent, emotional breakdown, midlife crises, ageing, retirement and bereavement all present challenges which homeopathy can help to address.

You don’t need to suffer in silence or put up with symptoms. They’re there as an early warning sign, indicating the need for attention. Don’t dither about a health appointment and remember, if you can’t make time to be healthy, one day you will have to make time to be ill.

Over 60s

Homeopath for over 60s

There’s always a lot to talk about with someone over 60.  What distinguishes this age group from younger ones is the fact that most people in this age bracket are living with at least one chronic condition.
